After the death of Salvatierra, his sons return to the village from Buenos Aires to deal with their inheritance: a shed packed with painted rolls stretching over two miles in length and depicting personal and communal history. Museum curators from Europe come calling to acquire this strange, gargantuan artwork. But an essential one of its rolls is missing. A search that illuminates the links between art and life ensues, as an intrigue of family secrets buried in the past cast their shadows on the present.

Pedro Mairal made a splash with his debut novel, Una noche con Sabrina Love, which tells the story of an 18-year-old boy who wins a night with a porn star of his dreams. Una noche con Sabrina Love (1999), was made into a film by Alejandro Agresti and was widely translated. Mairal, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1970, is a professor of English Literature; he has been recognized as one of the most original voices in Latin American literature today, and in 1998 was awarded the Premio Clarín. He is also the author of the book of short stories Hoy temprano(2001) and the novel El año del desierto (2005). In 2007 he was included in the Bogotá 39, which named the best Latin American authors.

Im Alter von neun Jahren stürzt Juan Salvatierra vom Pferd: Er überlebt knapp, verstummt jedoch für immer. Als Autodidakt widmet er sich von nun an dem Malen, mit zwanzig fängt er an, sein Leben auf gigantischen Leinwandrollen festzuhalten. So entstehen traumartige Sequenzen in neoprimitivem Stil, in denen Salvatierra das Fließende der Realität erfassen will: ein Straßenfest etwa, das sich während der Militärdiktatur in eine Razzia verwandelt oder ein Maler, der die Landschaft wie ein Orchester dirigiert. Als Salvatierra stirbt, reist sein Sohn Miguel aus Buenos Aires an, um das fast vier Kilometer messende Kunstwerk zu retten. Doch die Leinwandrolle für das Jahr 1961 fehlt. Après un accident de cheval à l’âge de neuf ans, Salvatierra a perdu l’usage de la parole.C’est donc dans le silence qu’il commence à peindre, en secret, sous forme de longs rouleaux, une toile de quatre kilomètres de long qui représente un fleuve et les détails de la vie quotidienne d’un village côtier en Argentine. Après sa mort, ses enfants installés à Buenos-Aires reviennent s’occuper de l’héritage : un gigantesque paquet contenant les rouleaux peints. Intrigué par le travail monumental de son père, Miguel commence à trier ses papiers. Il découvre alors des secrets de familles liés au passé et qui étendent leurs ombres sur le présent.Alors qu’il tente, avec obstination, d’exposer cette extraordinaire peinture (soixante-quatre rouleaux cousus ensemble), il est déconcerté et ému par la luxuriance, la couleur, la beauté de la toile en opposition à la morosité de la vie terne qui est la sienne, ses ratages, sa solitude. Au fur et à mesure qu’il dévoile le passé, la figure de son père grandit et devient de plus en plus complexe.
